Open Laparoscopy: The Obese Patient

Harrith M. Hasson, MD

The procedure is now described, step-by-step, in a markedly obese, nulliparous patient weighing 220 pounds.

Since the technical difficulty of open laparoscopy is not related to the degree of patient obesity, this procedure is easier to perform in obese patients because a larger, yet disappearing, incision can be made, and such an incision provides a more adequate field of exposure, which enhances the ease of operation. Several studies have presented excellent results with the use of open laparoscopy in markedly obese patients.
